It's been a funny old week, to paraphrase Arkwright at the end of every episode of Open All Hours.
Husband unexpectedly hospitalised just as Younger Son and family arrived from Italy. A good time to have them around in that YS could visit his dad, a bad time in that Husband couldn't enjoy their all too short visit.
A good time in that YS could cook for and help look after me, a bad time in that I was torn between hospital and wanting to spend time with the grandchildren.
Even when Husband came home he stayed in bed and was slow to recover but finally I think he's turned the corner. He got up yesterday afternoon and sat in the garden with the family as we ate dinner, cooked by Daughter.
Husband looking thin because all his excess fat has leapt across to me!
I think I got the balance right: I don't think Husband was neglected too much, although he might argue - and I spent lots of time playing with the grandchildren.

When Granddaughter3 launched herself at me |
|
Three generations. |
Last year when we went to Italy at the end of summer it was just after GrandSon4's birthday and I made a fire-engine cake for him. GrandDaughter3 had her birthday in February and since then she's been telling me that I had to make her a birthday cake when they came to visit. A unicorn birthday cake please. Standing up as the fire engine was upright.
I managed to get her to agree that a lying-down standy-up unicorn would be okay, but still I found myself at 8.30 pm, the night before the cake was needed, trying to work out how to do it. Forward planning is not my strong point. But I think it worked out pretty well!
They're on their way home now, probably in Gatwick as I write. It was too short a visit, but then again, any visit would have been too short!
Hopefully we'll get out to see them in Italy at the end of summer, assuming Husband and his heart are sorted by then. Yes, that's next on the agenda.
Meanwhile I still have five gorgeous grandchildren here to spend time with and enjoy. I know I'm just greedy and want them all close at hand. And a healthy husband.
I have been well cared for by my children, and I know lots of people have been praying for Husband. I am so grateful for all your good wishes.

Hooray! Glad to hear he's on the mend! Lovely visit despite the timing. Wishing him a speedy recovery now.Take care, best wishes, Blods xx
I'm very glad of the update, Liz! It sounds as if everything's going in the right direction. That really was a short visit, but I'm glad they came anyway. You're a great cake maker!
Good news. And grandchildren to boot! How wonderful that hubby arrived home to spend some time with the visiting family! It must have been extra special to have everyone around and hubby on the mend! Love the cake!
Glad your Husband is doing better at home and getting stronger. That's a wonderful photo of the two of you. I enjoyed all the other photos as well, especially the one of granddaughter launching herself at you, so cute! Nice that someone caught that on film. But I must say . . . that unicorn cake is AWESOME. It looks professionally done and would sell in a snap in any bakery!
"funny old week" for sure, but it seems you struck a nice balance. Good to see your husband home and smiley.
And that unicorn cake - like a pro!
The unicorn cake is delightful - you are clever.
I hope everything keeps ticking on in the right direction and you can get to Italy to spend some time with that branch of your family. Do the children speak Italian?
Glad to hear your husband is home and feeling a little better.
That unicorn cake is awesome. I bet your granddaughter loved it.
As for tips on my hydrangea, I have none. I do nothing to it at all. I figure it's safer if I just leave it alone and let it do it's own thing.
Good husband news and good visit.
