So you want to know what we had to eat, right?

A meal at Hanson's last night. Couldn't go to our favourite, Slice, because they don't open on Wednesdays and even if they had done I'd have left it too late to book.

We went to Hanson's once before many years ago when it was in a different place. I recall it as being nice but very rich and loaded with cream.

The new restaurant is quite small but room for six couples with tables in between. If those tables had been filled I'd have been less comfortable but as it was it was okay, and gave me a long-awaited opportunity for people watching.

Couple number 1: kept popping out, presumably to smoke. She looked as if she'd come straight from the gym in her lycra. He left most of his meal.

Couple number 2: A sweet young pair. A gangly man with glasses and his petite girlfriend, celebrating her birthday I believe. He gave her a card and then had to spend five minutes explaining it so my first thought that they were both young doctors may have been wrong. Perhaps hose was a doctor and he was a physicist. Yes, that sounds more plausible.

Couple number 3: Rich older man and his glamorous young girlfriend. Why order a huge rib eye steak and then only eat your chips?

As I said to Husband, I would be a dreadful chef. Not because I would make such a mess in the kitchen or fail to get anyone's order ready in time as he suggested, but because I would come out from the kitchen and shout at people who didn't clear their plates.

Anyway, down to the food. We ordered the Taster menu. Hanson's specialises in fish and seafood dishes.

Potted smoked Mackerel with toasted sour dough, creamed horseradish, fresh fine herbs & apple jelly - it also had bits of smoked salmon as you can see. (Top right)
Seared scallop with salt-baked beetroot and candied walnut. (Centre right)
Cured Salmon gravadlax with a octopus salad Scandinavian style. (Bottom left)
Rendezvous of Sea food with new potatoes & chive beurre blanc. (Main pic)
or
Tournedos of beef fillet with sautéed wild mushrooms, béarnaise sauce & mash.(Bottom right)
White chocolate and raspberry mousse.

Yum yum! Your people-watching imagination is working well! That's why you're a novelist!

You would do well in a NJ diner. Where if you order dessert, your waitress is likely to say "What? You didn't finish your vegetables!"

As children, we only got dessert if we had finished up everything before.

But then the UK had rationing into the fifties.
