Manga me

Went into Waterstone's yesterday looking for a birthday present for GrandSon1. Ended up with two books for me and two books ordered at the library, also for me. This is why I shouldn't go into bookshops.

I was thinking along the lines of an appropriate mug or game for GrandSon1 and though I saw loads of wonderful jigsaws I'd like I wasn't convinced he'd play any of the games, fun though they looked. He's more of a computer game person.

Do you know they have a whole wall - that's about five bookshelf-wide sections - completely full of manga graphic comics? I was amazed. The bookseller said they're THE big thing now and, "Thank goodness for them, as they're keeping the shop going."

The other interesting thing about them is that you start at the back and read right to left. I was struggling with that but think GrandSon1 is young enough to cope.

Oh yes, manga from Japan have been around and staggeringly popular for years now. I've never read one though. As an old coot, I fail to see the attraction of them.

Surprisingly, neither of our oldest grandchildren, 16 and 13 are into manga or at least we have never seen any of the books when visiting their home. That said, they are like your grandson and more "into" computer games.

I loved my marvel Superman comics as girl though, Debra.

I don't think my grandson has read any either, Beatrice, but I want to get him back into the habit.

Interesting. I had known of the popularity of Japanese comics (at least anime), but I had never seen them in “graphic novel” form. I never was much interested in comics beyond the ones carried in newspapers….. with the exception of the incredible graphic novel series “Maus” by Art Spiegelman. Those books were very emotional for me.
