Now if this invention of my great-grandfather's had taken off I could be landed gentry by now.
I notice it says he "has already secured protection for his invention." Does that mean he took out a patent? Is it still valid? Could I begin manufacture? The price of wood is very expensive these days.

Hard to carry, cement coffins. I know that in Canada, most cemeteries must comply with government regulations that the grave itself have a cement liner into which the coffin is lowered. This is a matter of public health and safety, so that decomposing bodies with all their natural and chemical residues do not leech out and contaminate the water tables. Your great-grandfather had the right idea, just the wrong location for the cement barrier.
