A slight surprise

You may have wondered what a Bengal Eagle Owl was doing at the British Bird of Prey Centre.

The main viewing area and displays all feature native British birds but there is a secret aviary hidden away from public view, which only special people (who pay) get to see. In there they have some non-native birds, some of whom will only stay there for a while.

We saw Diego, an Argentinian Crested Caracara. They are apparently the smartest birds in the world. They were tried trained for displays but preferred to land and rummage in people's bags instead. Diego stays in the aviary by day but every evening he is taken home by a member of the staff who take it in turns to have a large bird of prey wander about their homes.

Then we were taken into another 'room' and asked if we could spot the bird. It took us a while.

He's a Tawny Frogmouth who when alarmed goes into camouflage mode. He's not an owl but more closely related to nightjars.

And I've just discovered I am Covid positive! I came home last night croaking.

Go on, say it, you know you want to. "We told you not stop wearing your mask!" But it was only once and very few people were around. Phooey, phooey, phooey.

But only faintly positive.

Take care! Hope it passes quickly and without long term effects. Covid is so easily transmissible now. Just about everyone we know has had it.

That is amazing camouflage! I hope your covid gets better quickly and without incident. It's everywhere, EVERYWHERE, now. But the vaccines work to keep away the worst effects, thank goodness.

Good luck! I think that everyone will eventually get Covid, but those who have been vaccinated seem to get off with light symptoms.

Thanks all. I've had all the vaccinations so hopefully it won't hit too hard.

Well, I could not spot the bird until the 2nd picture. Pretty good camouflage! I hope your covid is not too bad. Take care and feel better.

My wife felt “like a failure” when she acquired COVID….. she (and we) were always EXTREMELY careful and had as many boosters as allowed. But, I tried to assure her that we DID all we could….. and what we did WAS good because she did not get it for over two years….. and fortunately that allowed a) the vaccines to be developed (and boosters), and b) the virus mutated to a somewhat less damaging form….. so she should look at our work and effort as a SUCCESS!

With her maximally vaccinated status, she had quite mild symptoms. I suspect you also will have only mild symptoms too.

So, I would suggest, if you feel sad, instead you should try to feel happy for the good work you did to not get it for so long, and be thankful Science has been helpful in providing us the vaccines to make it more bearable. And…. drink a lot of fluids during your recovery too. 🙂

Oh…. and this Omicron strain is SO, So very easily transmitted. You may have inadvertently gotten it while masking.

I feel for you, Liz. Hope you get off as easily as most totally vaccinated people seem to do. Do you mind if I use this as an object lesson for Hunky Husband who "forgets" his mask if I don't remind him? (Of course, he has a great excuse - unfortunately.)
