Black and sloes

I was feeling a little sad today so we went to Mumbles Hill for a walk (before ice cream from Castellamare). George coped with it quite well as he didn't have too far.

When I was a little girl my mum brought me to the hill to pick blackberries. It's still a bit early for them now though.

I don't think we ever picked sloes though.

There's a lovely view from the top across the bay.

From the end of the hill you look out over the Tutt, the hill on which is situated the coastguard station. About ten years ago, it was announced that the coastguard station at Mumbles would close at some time in the future as part of the stream-lining process, but as far as I know the station is still operating.

You can just see the top of the building in this photo. Out to sea, to the left, you can see rough waters. There is a sandbank in this area and if you look very carefully to the right - you probably need a magnifying glass! - slightly further out than the white water, you may just make out a tiny triangle. That is the Mixon Bell, a warning to sailors of the shallow waters.

When tides and wind conditions come together, which could be once in fifty years, the sandbank is briefly exposed. When it happened last, in 1957, a small group of locals held a tea party there.

Are those the sloes that go into gin? I've never seen them before.

They are, yes, Kathy.

I'd never heard of sloes and had to look them up. So are you making wine, whiskey or jelly? I love your ocean views.

I haven't been able to look at a sloe berry since I tangled with sloe gin in the 1960s - ugh! Too much is too much.
