Albert Mouse

In the village this morning I stopped off at my old home, the house in which I was born. I think I've mentioned before that our home, because my great-gran lived there, was the setting for family gatherings, and photos were traditionally taken on the steps outside.

In this photo you can see my mum, far left, leaning on a stone. There's one on the other side as well, and they were made by my great-grandfather and say Sweet Home.

The house has been empty for a number of years now and has been neglected. Some building work was started on it but then stopped, leaving rubble everywhere.

I've probably also mentioned that I have tried to contact the owner to see if he would let me retrieve the Sweet Home stones. I've tried a couple of times with no success.

Today I scrambled over the mess to see if the stones were still there: they are.

One was covered by slates but this one was standing and looking good. I think I will try popping a note through the door on the grounds that someone, one day, must go in there again. I would be happy to pay a sensible amount for them as I would love to have them back.

A couple of friends have volunteered to go in with me and just take them but I can't bring myself to do that - mainly because it would be obvious who had taken them!

One little oddity. As children we always laughed when we looked at the name sign by the door.
'Albert Mouse, tee hee!'
