Hopefully, since it does not say it is a compendium of short stories, it WILL, as you had been assuming, tie all together in some fashion. It would be kind of frustrating to read and try to keep mindful of all the characters and then find it is a collection of short stories instead.

Nope, it's a collection. I've just finished it.
Not saying it's a collection of short stories is a big publication boo-boo.
