Over-active guilt

I must have been born with an over-active guilt gland.

In Sainsburys this morning doing my usual shop and I feel the need to explain to everyone the contents of my trolley. 'This is my usual shop. I am not stockpiling!'

Almost no soap left - what were people using before? - and I take some - because I always use soap and need it! I do buy two bars of doughnut-scented soap because I think the children will love it, but driving away afterwards, I feel guilty. Perhaps I should only have bought one. Does that constitute stockpiling?

It is interesting to note people's priorities as attested to by the empty shelves. Soap, toilet paper, biscuits, frozen peas.

And I felt too embarrassed to blow my nose so had to make do with surreptitious sniffs.

Is it just me?

Also notice Tom Hanks has come down the virus. Why Tom? Why not Trump? On the plus side, as social media has been quick to point out, Tom has survived a lot worse than a bug.

Buying two bars of soap is not stockpiling. Buying an entire grocery cart of soap is. Stop feeling guilty!

Thank you, Debra!

Buying two bars of soap could only be considered stockpiling were the purchase made by someone like me: I don't buy bar soap. I use liquid "soap" (actually, I use dish detergent to avoid the antibiotic stuff). Long ago, a tradesman working in a bathroom of our house let me in on a secret - that liquid soaps don't leave the film that can build up on surfaces as does solid, bar soap. It is so much easier to keep our sinks, showers (tile and glass), and tubs clean and streak-free, now. I thank that guy, mentally, every time I clean.

Liz, I think guilt is the female condition. We were taught about Eve's sin and we still lug it around with us.

We now have a zero waste shop locally and I may well start using liquid soap again, CopCar. I stopped using it to avoid plastic but if I re-use the bottle then I can live with that. And you're probably right about Eve and the female condition.

I agree with Debra, it's not stockpiling, emptying the shelves of toilet paper and dried pasta is! My daughter couldn't find any toilet paper yesterday, just for her usual shop, I bought her some from Morrisons today.
