The Bookish Life of Nina Hill and Me

Bookish life of nina hill review
The Bookish Life of Nina Hill
by Abbi Waxman

The title was enough to grab my attention. Nina is an introvert working in a bookshop. When she discovers she is part of a large and boisterous family she is horrified. Even more horrified than when she realises she is attracted to a member of her arch rival quiz team.

A fab story about people and books and a cat called Phil.

(I've decided I'm a bit mean with my stars but, still, a book will only get 5* from me if it's exceptional in its way.)

A Snapshot of Murder
by Frances Brody

This is the second Kate Shackleton, private detective, story I've read. Set in the 1920s in Bronte country it's atmospheric - as was the previous one I read - and a good tale with lots of red herrings.

The camera club, of which Kate is part, takes a trip to Yorkshire for the opening of the Bronte museum. While there an obnoxious member of the club is murdered and it's up to Kate and the London detective with whom she has worked previously - and romantically - to find out whodunnit.

Queenie Malone review
Queenie Malone's Paradise Hotel
by Ruth Hogan

It took me a while to get into this, indeed, I almost gave up but the fault was mine not the book's. I was reading it late into the night when Husband was in hospital and I wasn't absorbing it properly. Anyway I'm very glad I continued. It turned out to be a most surprising and excellent story of a woman rediscovering her past with wonderful characters.

The Year of Surprising Acts of Kindness
by Laura Kemp

Set in a tiny west Wales village this was a lovely romantic novel. The way of speaking English in Wales, especially for Welsh-first-language-speakers, with its little quirks is captured but maybe overdone slightly in places but that's the only flaw.

After her mother's death, in order to fulfil her wishes for her ashes to be scattered in the sea in her home village, Ceri visits Dwynwen for the first time, and finds herself falling in love with the place and the people.

Lovely characters, good story, happy ending. What more could you want?
