The closest you'll get me to blood

Yesterday we headed up the valley for Pontardawe Carnival.

When I was growing up there was a carnival in the village of Mumbles every year. It was the highlight of the year. But gradually, over time, the number of floats decreased and eventually it stopped altogether. So I was excited to discover that Pontardawe still had one.

Sadly it was a small parade rather than what I think of as a carnival. No floats, a couple of bands, two horses, and a few child dancers/gymnasts.

Best of show must have been the Swansea Pipe Band.

But I still love drumming and, had I the time, would be inclined to join a samba band. It's not obvious from this photo but most of the marchers were women of a certain age, and older.
Nuora was especially disappointed as Italian carnivals are still big things with proper floats. I don't know why they've fallen out of favour: maybe cost, lack of community spirit, too much work and effort.

Pontardawe, Younger Son and Nuora are finding, has a vibrant and supportive community. It's probably a little smaller than Mumbles and almost certainly poorer.

Oh, yes, but I did get to sit on a big one.
BloodBikes Wales
Blood Bikes is a charity run by volunteers. They transport blood, breast milk, medicines, organs (not sure about that) to hospitals throughout Wales. I'd never heard of them before yet they do amazing work - all for free! People are wonderful.

It's astonishing just how much is done, quietly and efficiently, day in and day out by volunteers everywhere.
