Optimistic pessimist

Over lunch in Sainsburys Husband asked me, 'Did you read the report by Mark Carney?'

Sometimes I wonder if Husband knows me at all.

In case you're wondering, no, I hadn't read the report by the manager of the Bank of England that foresees a 35% drop in house prices should we leave Europe with No Deal.

* * * * * *
On the next table a woman said to the man she was with, 'I don't want to make you feel bad but ...'
Then Husband spoke to me so now I'll never know what nasty things the woman was about to say.

Incidentally Husband was probably about to tell me about the article he'd read in New Scientist about how having a positive attitude does actually make a positive difference. I think that was the gist of it.

In the same way that placebos make some people feel better so telling yourself you're doing a good job or being otherwise positive and optimistic work in your favour.

Although, and I'm not sure if it was in the same article - I listen to Husband but not that closely - another man, an economist was suggesting that it's not a question of if but when the next financial crash will happen. When accused of being a pessimist he retorted that, 'A pessimist is only an optimist who knows the facts.'

'I think I'm usually an optimistic sort of person,' I said to Husband.
'That's because you never know what's going on.'
I had to agree.

There are so many "experts" making so many differing predictions about Brexit, who knows what to believe? I still have no clear idea of how Brexit might change our lives - either for better or for worse. The politicians have no clear idea either despite all their confident bluster. Why am I suddenly thinking of lemmings heading for a cliff?

The "experts" just love the sound of their own voices, they created the economic crash of 2008 and now they're stirring up fear about Brexit. I am totally confused about the Irish hard border, trade deals, all of it really!

Nobody has a clue about Brexit, especially the ones who are "organising" it. The nearer it gets the sillier it all sounds.

The logic behind the predictions, unfortunately feels solid. I think that unfortunately anytime there is instability or rather drastic change, systems become depressed. I think this is true for our psyche and also true for societies.

And, unfortunately we are quite GLOBALLY destablizing in so many countries.

I also the article you mentioned your husband having read in the New Scientist. I liked the logic that was presented in that article quite a bit. In an anecdotal way, I can say I have tried to adopt the "positive attitude" idea. And, when I CAN muster up enough energy to do so.... I believe I really DO feel better. That is of course, not scientific proof. But... it seems to help me.
