I've just read a three-page article in Writing Magazine about why writers should. It hasn't entirely convinced me mainly because I can't work out how you get followers.
That plus the fact I couldn't understand half of the so-called Twitter Basics, such as retweet and hashtags. The only bit I really grasped was the Fail Whale (shown when Twitter stops working).
Twitter should suit me as I'm a concise writer. I'm also a particular writer: I write and rewrite even my Facebook statuses in my head until I'm satisfied. (Usually.)
Perhaps I'll investigate a bit more.

Oh, good gracious, another thing I would have to worry about?
Good Luck! People say they are following me - trouble is I don't have a clue where the hell I am or where the hell I am going!
I'm on Twitter, and so are a few other bloggers whose names you would recognise.
Oh please don't bother with it I've had a look at Stephen Fry's twitter site and i Just Don't Get It.
Also these proper blogs come up on Google I'm not sure tiwtter does. I keep accidentally Googling myself.
Also whoever wanted to buy them out is an idiot with internet mania. Youtube is potentially worth a lot. Blogger is useful. Myspace and Facebook I don't get either they call it a blog you get practically nothing and have to sign in which irritates me so much I barely bother. Signing into blogger is bad enough I hate signing into anything. Passwords. Very annoying indeed!
I just realized another reason to avoid it. I am inclined to be wordy. I post a lot of photos on my blog. Remembering that a picture is worth a thousand words, my blogposts would average 3000-4000. Twitter wouldn't make it.
Liz, if I can tweet I'm sure you can! Come on - it's fun!
I couldnt work it out either! Made an account ages ago and now can't remember name or password! Must try harder!
Good luck with yours
I love tweeting... and it can help to promote yourself as well as make new friends ... :-)
Let us know if you do tweet so we can follow you :-)
I tweet occasionally but I look at it as sometimes its the only way I can tell my son is on the same planet! He seems to know all about it!
I do - very infrequently - my problem is the 140 character cap... I'm too verbose :-)
I am on Twitter too!! Its a bit like Marmite , you either love it or hate it. I do get fed up with it , but just stay with it .. I have lots of friends that tweet , but I still don't really get it .. but no Twitter friends round here.
