This is the last remaining aqueduct on the Devon section of the Grand Western canal. The railway lines - part of the Great Western Railway - that were built under it eventually were part of the downfall of the canal system as trains could transport goods more efficiently than the old barges.

Fortunately in 1971 Devon Council responded to a campaign by local people to stop the canal being filled in and turned it into a country park.
