News: bad and good

In Yorkshire, two brothers, aged 10 and 11, have been charged with attempted murder.

In Italy, following the earthquake, a 98-year-old woman was pulled out alive after being trapped for 30 hours. She says she spent the time crocheting.

And in England a 97 year old man did his first ever skydive in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. How about that? Just because you're old doesn't mean you have to slump in a chair watching vintage sitcoms.

What's amazing about the earthquake is that people are so attached to a place that they continue to live there despite the ever-present risk of dying under a pile of rubble.

Harry Patch who is 134 spent the day meeting 'veterans' of the war in Afghanistan. Bless him.

Terrible news about those 2 boys - imagine their parents' shock!

That must be one feisty old lady to just keep on crocheting in the face of her possibly impending death. I'd love to meet her!

That is some sad news about those boys...and very frightening Liz. My God...so young. It breaks my heart...they are just babies really.

That woman was amazing...and smart to stay calm and pass the time before she was rescued by crocheting. What great spirit...bless her heart.

I read the news about the boys - so sad and awful.

Obviously the elderly was passing the time before the firemen arrived ;0)

When I visited Pompeii a couple of years ago, I was also struck by how people remain attached to potentially dangerous places, because their families have lived there for generations.

How clever of you to balance off the bad with the good.

The news of the two boys was shocking. It is easy to judge, without knowing the full facts. How might children so young conceive of such violence?

What was she making? A ladder?

Re the boys - what is sickening is that our society has in someway created this situation be it through poor education, poor regulation, poor law enforcement etc.

I always look on the ones that commited the crimes like this almost as much the victim as those they hurt when they are this age - they have to have "learnt" that from somewhere.

Very very sad day.
