When only a man will do

I came up with the perfect answer to a comment made in bible study on Tuesday. Only problem was it took twelve hours. I was lying in bed on Wednesday morning when, out of the blue, I exclaimed, "That's what I should have replied."

I almost wish I hadn't thought of a response. Now I've got to try to work it into the conversation next week. Except I'll have forgotten it by then.

Yesterday morning, instead of chilli, which has gone down the popularity scales, I made a sort of bolognaise sauce. I planned to use two jars of pasta sauce that were in the donations store upstairs. But I couldn't get the lids off.

I did consider popping across the road and seeing if there was anyone in the mosque who could do it, or alternatively standing on Zac's doorstep and waiting for a man to go by. I decided against this as ladies who hang about and wait for men in this part of town tend to have something else in mind.

In the end I just made it up. Threw in a bit of this and a bit of that and a bit more of this. We also have loads of spaghetti in our donations and we tend not to use that so I've brought some home with the intention of making spaghetti pie crusts ready for the meat sauce. I've never made spaghetti pie before so it could be interesting.

I had a hair appointment in the afternoon so I wandered around town a bit in between. Tried on four different styles of jeans in M&S. Have you seen how many different styles there are? At least eight for goodness sake. And I didn't like any of them. Or more accurately it was my belly I didn't like.

I did get a jumper, a cardi and a t-shirt all for £9 in charity shops though so not a wasted time. This particular charity shop - Greyhound Rescue - has a very talented woman doing the window. It always looks lovely.

I'd only taken one tissue with me (I never usually go out without a hankie or a number of tissues: my nose runs year-round) and by now I was in desperate need so I called into Boots and when I was paying I realised the woman tidying items around the tills was one of those from my Monday exercise class.

I hovered around to speak to her. She greeted me and then I said we'd missed her on Monday. She looked at me blankly. "From where?"
"Exercise class."
"Oh, yes, where was I on Monday?" She thought for a moment then said, "Oh I was here in work. I was in school. I'm in school all week."

She had to go and help a customer then so I made a discreet getaway. I wasn't sure who was more confused. I was quite convinced it was Margaret from exercise class but this woman seemed uncertain even about how many jobs she had.

Perhaps my assumption that she worked there was wrong. Maybe she just liked tidying goods and helping people. But was it Margaret?

Comparing our experiences of mistaken identity made for an interesting conversation with my hairdresser anyway.

After all that it was tea-time/rush hour so, as I was passing through the bus station I thought I'd check bus times to save Husband having to drive through all the rain and traffic to pick me up. A bus was due to leave in two minutes.

It didn't turn up. The next one due to leave twenty minutes later turned up late, the driver got out and said, "No bus driver."

I came to the conclusion the high-tech boards giving passengers next bus information, was just guesswork. But by this time it was even rushier rush hour so I stuck it out and finally got on the 5.45 bus that left at 5.55.

It's a shame because I am in theory a fan of public transport especially with my free buss pass. Let's blame the rain and the rush hour.

I have often mistaken people because I have poor perception of faces. I've also been mistaken for another local woman many times, so I've learned to handle it from both viewpoints, tactfully, well as tactfully as I can, which is not very.

I recently bought a set of three jar openers that look like this:

They work amazingly well! My nemesis was always pickle jars but now I open them with ease!

Now you have me wondering if it was Margaret from exercise class. She might be someone who tidies when she goes in shops. Inquiring minds want to know.

Love,
Janie

My husband has trouble identifying people, always has. We don’t know many people here so he doesn’t make many mistakes now.

I always seem to come up with the perfect reply hours after a conversation took place.
An easy way to open a stubborn jar is to turn it upside down and smack the top of it down on a firm surface like a counter. It should open easy.
