A beautiful morning so after taking Husband and car for a service I came home and did some gardening.
I've spent a number of hours recently trying to clear the day lilies form the rose bed. I'm not sure how they got there but they established themselves good and proper, so much so that in pervious summers I have been unable to get at the convolvulus and brambles that have wrapped themselves around the roses.
So the day lilies had to go. And they didn't want to.
Husband took two wheelbarrow-fuls to the patch of land outside our front gate to see if they'll take there. They have little carrot-like roots and seem quite hardy so hopefully they will take over that area instead.
Meanwhile I was still pulling them up. A number had got up close and personal with this rose bush.
It took a lot of careful scraping to shift them. Even now I suspect there are more lurking under the surface just waiting but at least when it's clear I'll spot them early on and grab them. That's the plan anyway. There was a long-rooted bramble in amongst this lot too. When Husband appeared I asked him if he could help me - he was wearing gloves. He sighed and said, "What would you do if I wasn't here?"
"Wait until you were obviously." Silly question.
The bed is quite wide and behind the fence on the other side is a public footpath that is overgrown. I'm not sure how we can keep the intruding brambles, ivy and convolvulus from spreading into ours.
The rosebush looks much happier now although it didn't appreciate that what I was doing was for its benefit and kept stabbing me. My hands and face are covered in scratches. The bit behind the rosebush will have to wait until I have made more of an effort to find my gloves as it's very bramble-ridden.

Chain saw/hedge trimmer, LOL!
Not much difference in effect, I think. I'm interested to see you're able to do this so early in the year.
That sounds like hard work. I've given up on gardening. Now that my husband is gone I don't have anyone to take care of the stuff I can't do myself.
At my previous house I battled day lilies for years. They refused to stay in their assigned beds. I hope you have better luck.
