Trope?

Well, it's been grey and miserable here now for over a week - except Friday last which was our only bright day.

This sort of weather lowers the spirits and, certainly for me at least, causes apathy. I am sitting here thinking there is probably plenty I could be doing but I lack enthusiasm. And you know what this will lead to? Introspection and misery.

Must pull self together.

Boud and Debra, re your comments on Shrines of Gaiety, I had to look up what a trope was. I'm still not entirely sure so if you'd like to delve a bit deeper and explain to this ignorant soul I would be very grateful.

We finished watching the second season of The Capture last night. I have no idea who did what or why, or even who was the Bad Guy, but I was terrified nevertheless. It's about deepfake technology and how it can be used to change, well, anything. And if the state were to use it to create evidence the possibilities for legalised wrong-doing are endless.

I don't know how accurate the drama was in its portrayal and whether we yet have the technology they used but if we don't someone does I'm sure, and it won't be long.

As I understand it, a trope is a standardized, even stereotypical, plot device used and reused in certain genres of writing or literature. For example, the "rags to riches" trope in the classic Horatio Alger books or the "girl meets boy, girl loses boy, girl gets boy back and marries him" trope in romance books. Characters may change but underlying tropes are forever.

What she said! And Atkinson is masterly at manipulating her readers using tropes, so you need to be alert to that, too. Not your Dickensian storyteller.

I remember vividly those grey miserable days and how they sapped energy. You long for a bit of sunshine. This is when people plug in their therapy lamps.

I have the same response to a long stretch of miserable weather.

Actually - I feel like that in August and September when the temps are 100 degs F with 90% humidity. Too hot to move!
