Walked to the beach with Daughter and grandchildren today and back via Muddy Mail Room again. It has nice cakes but its choice of drinks is not brilliant. This time I had a caramel milk shake.
GrandDaughter2 slapped her forehead. "It's meant to be milky, Granny."
"Yes, but it has a sort of sweet taste slightly like gone off milk."
All three grandchildren tasted it and declared it nice. Just me then.
In the car on the way home I heard the news headlines. The railway workers are striking today. The reporter said, "Only one in five trains is running."
I cheered, "Yay."
He said 'one in five is' not 'one in five are'.
It's the little things that keep me happy.

grammar makes the world go round. My world anyway. Just listening to an Andy carpenter audio book. He says the judge asked my client and I. I shouted at the screen NO, HE BLOODY DIDN'T! Not that I get too passionate about it. But some things are important. You have to take a stand.
Absolutely! I correct songs as I'm singing along!
That is wonderful about the correct use of “is”!!! For me, the most glaring challenge is when folks say “….the data is suggesting…..” instead of “…the data ARE suggesting…”. Unfortunately, sometime in the last several years “data is” has in SOME circles become acceptable. It always causes me to cringe when I hear it.
I would like to hear more about how you describe milk going off as having a “sweet” aspect to its flavor. To me, I have always equated sweetness with especially fresh milk. And….to me… your caramel milkshake looks good….. ALMOST as good as a dark chocolate milkshake….. or better yet, a dark chocolate malt!!!!🙂

Oh, how nice that someone used is when is should be used. I am disturbed by the lack of subject-verb agreement these days, along with the increasing number of past tense errors. The past tense of lead is led, not lead. I see lead when it should be led in news articles! And don't even get me started on the use of myself when it should be I. Myself and John went to the baseball game. Aaaaaaargh!

I have a slight cold at the moment, PipeTobacco, so my tastebuds may have been a bit dodgy. I think the caramel wasn't strong enough to come over as caramel so it just felt not right.
It's a good job I very rarely use the phrase you mention as I would probably say, 'data is' even though I know enough Latin to know the word data is plural.
I think people try hard to sound well-spoken, Janie, and think that's what they're doing when they say that.
