From my desk I can see the front path. I always hoped no-one could see me but now I've done something strange with the blinds (because they broke) people can.
So I'm sitting here when I see a man coming up the steps. He has flyers in his hand. Suddenly he turns around and goes back down. I hope he has been frightened away by my ferocious guard dog - who hasn't actually noticed him.
A few seconds later and he's coming back up the steps. I think, 'Oh no, please don't knock. Please just leave a flyer and go. Please don't make me have to talk, and say no, to you, whatever it is. Please don't knock.'
He knocks.
I fear it's too late for me to hide and Husband, on whom I can normally rely to get rid of unwanted callers with no pangs of conscience, is upstairs playing Fortnite.
Muttering under my breath, 'Where are you, George, when I need you to look intimidating?' I open the front door.
The man who has a lovely Irish accent - almost enough to make me waver in my resolution - is cleaning roofs, paths, anything I want. I tell him Husband usually does it but take a leaflet - which will go straight in the recycling bin.
And now I feel bad for the trees.
Is it just me?

Or was he just casing the joint?
Lol. I hate turning people away too. However, we get few of them these days. We have a Federal election next month so I guess that will change soon enough.
You know, there's no law that says you have to answer the door even if they see you inside. It's your house and you control who gets a response. It's like answering the telephone. If you don't want to answer, you don't have to. I frequently don't answer my door if I don't know who it is. Sometimes I ask (through the unopened door) who it is and what they want, and then still refuse to open the door. I don't care if they think I'm a bitch. I am!
Like Debra, I believe in letting people ring or knock to their heart's content without believing that I must answer them (phone or door). Yes, I used to feel guilty accepting unwanted literature and no longer do so, even when I have answered the doorbell. Hunky Husband and I are both pretty good at saying "No" at the door, thank goodness. Guilt isn't easy and it's a mystery to me why we feel guilty over some of the things that we do.
I get those types of sales calls too though usually they stop and walk up to me when I'm working in the yard (I'll do all this hard hot work for you for a really cheap price). However haven't found anyone cheaper than me to do the hard hot work.
