To be read

On the left the library books I borrowed before lockdown, now read; in the middle, books read but not yet recorded in my journal; on the right, books I have gathered from around the house, from various To Be Read piles.

The Flight of Cornelia Blackwood
by Susan Elliot Wright
5*

I don't tend to read this sort of book as a rule. You know the ones? They all have a similar look about them, often with a woman's legs on a door or staircase on the cover, and go along the lines of 'She thought she had a perfect marriage but now he's dead and she finds out about his secret life.'

But I found this gripping. It's painful to read especially if you've lost a baby and it is a sad story, but very well done.

I, Coriander
by Sally Gardner
5*

I read this while sitting in the sunshine yesterday afternoon. It's a children's/Young Adult book so quite short but wonderful. It's set in the city of London in the seventeenth century, the time of Cromwell and the plague.

It's magical and historical, an unusual mix, that I wasn't sure about but that worked brilliantly. Reminiscent of both The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Sleeping Beauty, it's about love and power, good and evil. Excellent. Highly recommended. Can't wait for GrandDaughter1 to be slightly older so she can enjoy it.

"I, Coriander" sounds intriguing. I only have two books out from the library before the quarantine struck: Terence McNally, "Selected Works" (and now he's dead of Covid-19) and "Captain America: Captain of Nothing" (comic book anthology). One extreme to the other, LOL!
