Considering mortality and reversing time

Husband was sitting at his computer when I got home the other evening. I kissed him on the head and said, 'You love me, don't you?'
'What have you done?' he said without a flicker.
'I reversed the car into a wall.'

He laughed and I was relieved.

He didn't laugh when he went out and looked at the car. 'You must have been going fast to do that much damage!'
'No, I wasn't! How fast could I go reversing in an underground car park?'
'You must have been. You've damaged all those bits! It's going to cost a fortune.'

It wasn't strictly my fault. At least not totally my fault. When the car is in reverse Mini beeps if she gets even a little bit close to something.
'Mini didn't beep!' I said.
Husband looked at me doubtfully.
'She didn't!'
'You mean you didn't hear her. You were too busy talking to GrandSon4 in the back.'
'No! She didn't. Nuora can tell you.'

'She didn't beep,' I said at the time to Nuora. 'She didn't beep, did she? I didn't hear her. Did you hear her? Did she beep?'
'I didn't hear her,' Nuora said.

Husband is taking Mini to the repair shop for an estimate today. I am not looking forward to that.

It did unnerve me though. I was very cautious driving to the shop yesterday and I'm starting to think perhaps I shouldn't drive in the dark. Perhaps I should become a proper old woman and not go out alone after dark in the car. (It wasn't dark in the car park by the way.)

This in turn made me consider mortality. I'm 66 and I feel young. Too young to be old. But these things will happen to me in time. I just hope it's not too soon.

I can attest that a car does not always beep when one should expect it to. I had just backed out of a parking spot and transitioned from watching the rearview camera to looking out the windshield (and had shifted into a forward gear) when my car was jarred by the impact of an MG that had just been backed out of an across-the-aisle parking space. My passenger and I agreed that there had been no beep and that the rearview camera had turned off, implying that we were in a forward gear.

One infers that the MG was backing at a high speed (for backing from a space) since the MG did not appear in the backup camera before the camera turned off and I shifted my gaze forward. (I habitually back up quite slowly, keeping a keen eye on the camera.) It was unsettling, but no damage was visible to either car. (The MG driver pleaded that I was also in motion; but, I was already in a forward gear when my car was hit or the camera would still have been turned on.)

Unfortunately, I cannot attest to ever having seen a wall move toward my car. OTOH: It's all relative. *chuckling* We should be happy that the damage was limited to your car - expensive to fix, but not as serious as having damage to you!

Indeed, CC. Around £2500 but no-one hurt and that's the most important thing. And I am being more careful now. So probably a good thing.

Good grief, £2,500, that sounds extortionate for a few scratches! I wouldn't rely on mechanical beeping myself, I would only trust my own eyesight. Technology isn't always reliable.

All I can say is "Yikes!" when I convert that to Cdn $...
