It was originally called Llanfairpwllgwyn (church of something by the white pool) but according to the guidebook, back at the end of the 19th century, 'some wit' added the extra letters. Maybe even then it was a tourist gimmick!
Aka the church of Mary in the hollow of the white hazel near the fierce whirlpool and the church of Tysilio by the red cave.

I went there when the ticket station was still in operation and you could buy a souvenir ticket from there.
Like Sally it was a very long time ago! I have been back on more than one occasion though.
Oh, is that that place with the longest name in the world. When I visit you I will insist on you just saying it--the whole thing.
I remember being on a train in that station trying to read that sign or an older one it was some time ago. Thanks for the translation.
As a kid I had a platform ticket from there which was like 4 inches long to fit the name on :-)
