I also saw twenty-three, yes 23, magpies in a field this afternoon. I only know the rhyme up to nine but I'm hoping it goes like this:
Five for silver
Six for gold,
Seven's a secret never to be told,
Eight's a wish
And nine's a kiss ...
Twenty-three's a best-selling novelist.
See, if even almost rhymes - if you slur your words a bit.
Off to make pancakes now for Younger Son and Zac's. Will reply to comments later.

23 - the number of the Illuminati ;-)
Ah, that must be a different one to the rhyme I know!
Mine goes
One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
And four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told
I always figured you just start over again if there are more than seven, so let's see, that would make your twenty-three magpies an omen for ...
... A GIRL!!
So, when's the happy event, then?
LOL!
I saw the same number at least in a tree at Parc Howard in Llanelli when walking Viv in '78. Amazing.
I'll have to look up the Illuminati, stu!
I got mine from the old tv programme theme song, jay, so they might just have made it up! I shall tell Daughter about your prophecy! I live in hope ...
I couldn't believe how many there were, aileni!

Its just the time of year affecting magpie flocks, thats all.
Thank you, stu.
