Gareth wants a new tattoo and he wants it in Latin. He was asking me if I knew anything about sentence construction etc because it must be right.He wants: Today is a good day to die.
Gledwood offered some suggestions and, after consulting and researching, I've come up with: Hodiernus dies bona diem morior.
Any advice (especially directed at Dr Stu, whom I shall email as well.)
I think he'll have to have it across his bum as it's quite long.
*grin* sorry no help at all with latin. I love tattoos (well good ones anyway!)and I love being tattoed, its very relaxing!
ReplyDeleteMy experience with Latin is only as related to my late profession-pharmacy. However it does look close to right.
ReplyDeleteIf you know a professor in the so-called Latin-derived languages, they might be helpful. (Spanish and Italian come to mind)

Umm- an expert in Italian is not necessarily an expert in Latin and I'm not. Why doesn't he have one of DD's more cheerful phrases instead?

And although the roots look good, I can only vouch personally for the hodie est and the dies.
bonus looks bogus to me and morior--well, maybe too much influenced by my poor Spanish and Italian since my study of Latin to say about that one.
Hmmm. More than one translator says the same. Maybe bonus is not bogus after all.
