"Fornication!"

I'm used to there being no such thing as a usual night at Zac's but to walk through the door and be greeted by 'Fornication!' still managed to surprise me.

Then it was 'Jill, come here.'
I looked around; it was me she was talking to. I obediently did as told.
'What's fornication? Is it the same as adultery?'
'Um, not really.'
'What is it then?'
'Well, having sex.'
'So that American preacher on Friday night was wrong then.'
'I think so.'
'Is it like when you play with yourself?'
'Um, no, that's um ... (big gulp) (chicken out) something else.'

After that beginning demon possession was no big thing.

P.S. I thought I'd better check that I was right and the American evangelist wrong in his use of the word. According to Chambers fornication is sex between two unmarried people but can sometimes be expanded in its use to involve one married person. So we were both sort of right but I was righter.

According the OED that I have on my Kindle...

"fornication n. Formal or Humorous sexual intercourse between people not married to each other."

Seems to be explicit (sic) that it is out of wedlock - not the same as adultery as that is

"adultery n. voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not their spouse."

So by OED definition (the only one that matters surely ;-)) your preacher may have been correct

You need to carry a dictionary to each meeting clearly

Yikes! I never anticipated this as a post.

since my personal belief all definitions mentioned are wrong, my only reply is sin is sin so does it matter?

And let me out of this one, please.

er sorry to be a bit academic about this....'pornea' the greek word used in the bible for 'fornication' can include all sorts of 'stuff'!! In some contexts it can indeed mean or include marital unfaithfulness (adultery) but covers a load of unmentionables on such an upmarket blog.
