'Fine, thanks.'

I was just thinking that I should text a couple of people I hadn't seen for a while.

Every time I see one of them, I say, 'Hi, how you doing?' - and she tells me. Now I know I'm her friend and I want to be supportive but it would be wonderful if just once she replied by saying, 'Fine.'

But then again in all the time I've known her I've never had better than an 'Mm, so so.'

Sounds like my aunt. She always tells me how she is. So I don't ask as much as I used to out of self-defense!

Apologies for the language but...

In rehab we always had to introduce ourselves and say how we were feeling at that point.

Hi I'm so and so, alcoholic and I'm feeling angry about... or whatever...

If a newcomer said "fine" we'd all go into heaps of laughter. We'd then all chime together ...

"F***ed up, Insecure, Neurotic and Emotional"

Problem is for non alcholics "fine" is a perfectly plausible response. However when I'm ask how I am I'm now so conditioned I often tell them... much to their regret and mine some times. :-)

Me ... I'm FINE at the moment! :-)
