The Great Bee Adventure

Part 1: the hive arrives

Younger Son has been doing a bee-keeping course so when the opportunity arose to acquire a hive he took it. The intention is to buy two and keep one in the garden of the house he and Nuora are in the process of buying and keep one in our garden. On the kitchen roof to be exact.

Before we went on holiday the dishwasher broke, the kitchen roof leaked and the garage began to fall down. Since coming home we've bought a new dishwasher and had the roof fixed so it's all ready for the hive. Younger Son is collecting the bees later on this week.

He is very enthused about bees and has been telling us some of the things he's learned: bees really are exceptionally clever. He's going to be responsible for looking after 'our' bees - a bit like a surrogate mother we're just providing a base for them to thrive. And apparently the queen of this particular hive is especially fertile: she lays thousands of eggs.

Husband is also hoping that having bees will mean that our plum trees get pollinated and might actually produce some fruit one of these years. He's threatened to chop one down if it doesn't. 

I am excited - as long as the bees do as they're supposed to and fly up and out of the garden rather than swarm around it. I'm sure they will.

P.S. The garage problem is yet to be solved.
