Sono lay chinkway

Husband and I are not making much progress with our Italian.

We had to begin again and we're still now only on lesson 11. We're trying to do a lesson - about 25 minutes - each evening so I'm not sure why it's taking us so long.

Although it could be to do with the fact that we have to keep repeating lessons.

It's all the computer; we don't have manuals. So I'm trying to remember the words by picturing them spelled as they sound. Thus 10 is dearchi and 5 is chinkway.  D'accordo?

Buono! Try making flash cards. I find it helps my students learning French and Spanish and I did it when I went to Italy so I'd know a bit of vocabulary. Whatever works.

By the way, just buy those packs of recipe cards - usually they're about $1.00 Cdn for 100 of them

Non d'accordo! Sono lay chinkway - They are the five? And ten is more like dyechi. Avanti avanti - ti migliorerai. Keep going - you will improve!

I think ten is more like deeAYchee.

My problem with Italian is that I have not spoken it for 45 years and do not remember it. Except for those random words that pop into my head when I am trying to speak Spanish. I imagine some are coming that are the same in Spanish and I don't notice that the long ago knowledge of Italian is helping me. It is the ones that are not the same that plague me. People look at me with a blank look and I say "That's Italian, isn't it?" and of course they continue to look at me with a blank look because if they could understand that I wouldn't be trying to speak Spanish with them, would I?

We have the same problem with French, katney. Words creep in and sometimes it's fine because they are more or less the same. Other times it doesn't work so well.

Nick, quite right.
