Looking on the bright side

As we sat in the courtyard, huddled over our salad, I commented that Autumn had come too early. 'It's the sort of evening we should be cwched in front of the fire, snug and warm.'

The weather through July and August has been truly appalling. The only thing that can be said in its favour is that it has diminished the need for leg shaving.

Well, you know, Liz, I've been corresponding with some Americans and praising our summer for not being stiflingly hot. Try Sicily, where one can't even go outside before nightfall. Britain can be a delight with its greenery.

Our summer has been very warm, but the usual 100+ deg. days has been limited to 1-2 and Aug. so far has been downright cool with more rain than I can remember.

Been good for my baby trees I spent far too much on to replace the 8 giant trees we lost in the ice storm in February.

I think we've had a glorious summer with a couple of heat waves, but normally sunny and warm. The best we've had in a long, long while. If you recall, last summer was the pits, raining constantly. Maybe things go in spurts - last year, wasn't your summer good?

Leg shaving...um, yes. Our summer's here for the weekend and caught us unawares...so, it was razors, dipilatory creams, etc in full swing this morning.

Mind you, it's still officially winter...

I'd have been happy to send you some of our 90-100 degree weather the past few weeks. I think we broke the record in Portland for the most days over 90 ever. The rest of the US has been exceptionally cool and rainy. I dunno WHAT has happened up here in our little corner of the world!

I thought it was just Scotterland where autumn had come early. It makes me think of cuddling up with hot soup, not dancing round the garden with a g and t and a fairy dress. Let's hear it for non leg shaving though.

The appalling weather also deters the widespread male urge to go around in unsuitable shorts, ratty T shirts and prominent beer bellies. Perhaps rain has its advantages.

We have sunshine for a change, and no wind! But I agree, the summers have been pretty useless the last couple of years, haven't they?

Must test the new chimney before the winter. A nice roaring coal or log fire is so wonderful when it's cold and windy out!

Ah, but just think of december and a nice warm sunny day on 25th!

leg shaving? oh wear jog pants as they disguise a multitude of things (especially if they are baggy)
