The joys of modern technology or How I stopped worrying and learned to love the remote

Last week our digibox died. That's the thing that allowed us to watch several free television channels. Oh, and digital television. So we needed a new one and decided to buy one of these super-techy ones that allow you to stop and start live television. Which is still a mystery I haven't been able to come to terms with.

But enough of my inadequacies. Husband works away and spends his evenings in the gym and the bar so was going to be missing The Apprentice. 'Record it for me,' he said.
'Um, yes, okay. I'll try.'
'It's easy. All you've got to is press the Record button.'
'Yes, okay.'

I studied the remote.

Not a Record button in sight.

I found the instruction manual. It said, 'Press the Record button.' I looked at the remote again. There wasn't a Record button.

I went and found Younger Son. 'Have a look at this,' I said, thrusting the remote in front of him. 'Can you see a Record button?'
'Yeah, there.'
'How do you know that's the Record button?!'
'It's red.'

I gave up and went away.

We continued the discussion over dinner. 'Red always means stop,' I said.
'Not on remotes. The Record button is always red.'
'Well, why doesn't it say Record on it?'
'Because everyone knows the red button is for recording.'
'I didn't know! Red always means stop!'
'The square means stop.'
'So does red.'
'Okay, what means Play on the remote?'
'The arrow.'
I could see I was going to lose this argument. My logic was already looking flawed even to me. I gave up.

Bah, humbug.

P.S. I quite often mistype 'that' as 'atht'. Spellchecker asks me if I mean it to be 'at ht'. Why on earth would I want to write at ht? It's not even Welsh.

I can totally identify with this situation. It's all a mystery to me.

My youngest son - yes, the one who can't read! - was sitting behind me as I read this to my OH (who has a hate-hate relationship with remotes) Youngest son said much what yours said.

Don't you hate youngest sons!?!

PS. Spellcheckers have no sense, and they spell in American. I'm always shouting at mine!

our digibox is an old one too - I want to get a new DVD recorder with freeview built in and I also want to record my 100s of old videotapes - I keep putting it off as the machines get cheaper and better all the time so no point buying too soon - been thinking of it for more than a year now - still haven't found the ideal model yet.

You are blogging up a storm today.
I love the new box that we got like yours. Fortunately it does have everything written on the buttons. They assume the North Americans are more stupid perhaps that the Brits but they are wrong, except for those younger sons.

Unfair to us colorblind folk. TiVo has a remote ... the record button says ... Record. Of course, I'm color blind.

Oh gee, Liz, I'm with you on this. I still can't figure out how to record one program and watch another on a different channel at the same time. I used to be able to do it on my old-fashioned VCR, but now I have a VCR/DVD player and can only watch movies on it! Send your son over to teach me how to use the remote(S)!!! Help!!!

Have you thought of offering a Welsh language version of your site, Liz?

Hum? Remote control? I haven't even figured out how to operate the DVD player. I have to ask my teenager too.
When they are 15... they know everything. I need to learn all I can from her, before she gets too old and forgets it all.

That's the same remote as ours... and Mrs F has exactly the same problem.

I've shown her several times but still the red button and the record button (which has a red circle obviously) still confuse here along with .... "which is forwards and backwars..... what's pause again"

Women and technology don't mix... :-)
