It never rains in the Midlands

It is absolutely pouring down. Someone has taken his finger out of the cloud-dam and there's no stopping it now.

It makes me wish I lived in the Midlands. According to my mother-in-law, it never rains there. Our telephone conversations go something like this.
M-i-l: The weather's been atrocious, hasn't it?
Me: No, it's been fine here.
M-i-l: Well, yes, it hasn't been that bad here either. Just the occasional little shower.

When we visit - as we're doing this weekend - if it's raining, it's my fault. 'You must have brought it with you because it was lovely before you arrived.'

(I'm not serious about living in the Midlands. How do people survive when they haven't got the sea on their doorsteps?)

I know! I get claustrophobic driving up there! Frightening knowing you are going further and further into the middle of land... no edges for hundreds of miles... ooh, heeby jeebies!

I lived in the Midlands [Birmingham] for 2 years, the furthest from the sea I had ever been. Can't say I'd recommend it for that reason.
Cheers

When the sea is at Whitley Bay or (in the present case) Withernsea, you learn to cope.

When we moved (temporarily) to Ottawa (middle of Canada) I swore the air was DEAD! I could hardly wait to get back to the west coast for that fresh ocean air.

I don't know. I have to be within quick reach of the sea.

Illuminate us please : what is the centre of Great Britain? The point furthest from the sea?

We get by most of teh time Liz. THat said, I often get a need to see water. I usually do by going down to the Thames at Rainham. It's not pretty but it does satisfy the craving.

I do envy you (and Siani) for having the sea and the Gower close to hand

There are a million reasons not to live in the Midlands.... :-)

Also I remember driving up on a beautiful morning for the European GP the only time an F1 race was at Donnington. As soon as we got there it was like the taps opened. My mate said "Millions will tune into to watch this all around the world and say. Oh that must be near Birmingham cos it's p***ing down"

So it does rain in the Midlands.

Your right Liz..It is always raining worse in the Midlands..Living near Northampton was a few hours from the nearest coast..and now in Oxford a little closer..but I miss living in Llantwit Major, when we could walk to the beach everyday. I love living near water.

one way is to live in the mountains and then visit the coast frequently.

this is a method that works particularly well in places like the us and canadian pacific coasts, and, of course, maine.
