I swallowed a fly

It has been fortuitous having Holly with us for the week: she has stopped us moping around. She thought sitting on my lap would cheer me up. And she was right.

We've also been on lots of Harvey's favourite walks, which he hadn't been able to do for some time. I say his favourite walks but actually any walk, or the one he was on at that particular moment, was his favourite. Even up to a couple of weeks ago he got excited if he thought he was going out - even though the reality was a lot harder than he remembered.

Holly and I have been exploring the woods. For the last eighteen months or so, council workmen have been clearing the undergrowth, particularly of the rogue rhododendrons that threatened to overwhelm the native woodland. Where there were narrow footpaths, now there are JCB-wide tracks and industrial-size shredders. It used to be that you could have put me down anywhere in the woods and I'd have had a good idea where I was but now all the familiar features have disappeared; it's very discombobulating.

Still we enjoyed ourselves although Holly now thinks her name is Harv-Holly.

Oh, yes, and I swallowed a fly. But I've no intention of following in the steps of the old lady.
xx

You have to watch out for those rogue rhododendrons springing out at you.

Dear Holly - bless her. She is doing her best for you. I think it must be very therapeutic to be going on some of Harvey's favourite walks. I am sure he is still with you in a way. love from Sicily.

Lovely dog Holly. Isn't it funny how big dogs think they're lap-dogs and little dogs think they're Great Danes? Enjoy those walks -

How absolutely wonderful to see your smiling face and know that Holly has had a part in making you OK, at least for a while. Both of you look quite content. Maybe you could just keep Holly around for a while longer. Tell your friends you're not sure what happened to her, she just slipped away one night.

Lovely word, discombobulating.

What a lovely photo. How nice you've had Holly to help you say goodbye. Hang in there, Liz.

I hope you put salt and pepper on that fly, Liz...or at least a dash of balsamic vinegar!

Isn't Holly a lovely looking girl!

Lovely to see you getting comfort from the big gallumper there.
Nothing like a dog to cheer you up. You'll be sorry to see her go but I'm glad she's helping you with this difficult time.
regards

I realise how much I miss dogs- Can't really keep one, because there'd be no one to mind him a lot of the time.

But I do sponsor a dog for Dogs Trust- Freddy.
It's a lovely idea, you get letters from your dog!
For people lke me, who need to feel we have a dog in our lives, it's great.

Liz, glad you're coping with Harvey's loss and that Holly is helping you! (Sounds to me - when the time is right - that getting another dog may be a good idea for you - it worked for us when we lost our old dog. You can never replace the one that is gone but it's amazing how the new one can fill up a new place in your heart.) In the meantime, hang in there...
