Getting on

Son-in-law was cycling in a race yesterday in the Welsh hills so I took Holly up to be reunited with her people. Daughter did say we could keep her a bit longer if that would help but it would only have put off the inevitable dog-less day.

The house is very empty today and the kitchen seems enormous without a dog bed or bowls - or latterly, lots of bits of rug - to say nothing of a great smelly, slobbery, hairy monster.

We had a card from the vet. Inside it reads:
Grieve not,
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me
as if I were beside you ...
I loved you so -
'twas Heaven here with you.

As long as you have memories Harvey will always be with you.

Got a big choked up with the poem, but it does speak truth. Your dear Harvey just happens to be a great loving dog, instead of an invisible rabbit (as in the play/James Stewart film)! It was heaven for him and for you. I know you treasure those years.

He was named after the rabbit, mary!

Yes, Clare, the vet and staff were very good, and the words are so true.

Oh, Liz, I know that "empty house " feeling - it is so painful. What a lovely verse that is that the vet sent you. I hope it helps.

That is very nice. Must be a good vet.

Oh, dear friend...my heart breaks with you and for you. I can't imagine there isn't some special place where our treasured pets go when they die. I'm sure your beloved Harvey is there romping thru the grass and snapping at butterflies! I wish I was there to give you this in person, but this will have to do for now.....

What a lovely poem, I'm sitting here with tears in my eyes.

It is so hard to come home to that empty, dogless house...I know.
